Talas River is one of the key river systems in western Kyrgyzstan, originating in the Kyrgyz Ala-Too and Talas Ala-Too mountain ranges of the Tian Shan. It flows westward through the wide Talas Valley before crossing into Kazakhstan. The river system is primarily fed by snowmelt and seasonal precipitation from surrounding mountain ranges. In its upper sections, it forms narrow mountain streams, while in the valley it becomes a broad, slower-flowing river supporting agriculture and settlements. Historically, the Talas River basin is famous for the Battle of Talas (751 AD), a major event between the Abbasid Caliphate and Tang Dynasty forces, which had long-term cultural and technological impacts across Eurasia. Today, the river remains essential for irrigation, agriculture, and local ecosystems in the Talas region.
