Chatyr-Kul Lake is one of the highest and most remote lakes in Kyrgyzstan, situated on a high mountain plateau in the At-Bashy range near the Torugart Pass. It lies in an enclosed basin with no outflow, making it an endorheic lake. The lake stretches across a wide, flat highland plain surrounded by distant snow-covered peaks. Unlike typical alpine lakes, its surroundings are relatively open and steppe-like, with marshy shores and seasonal wetlands. Because of its elevation above 3,500 meters, the lake experiences harsh climatic conditions, including long winters, strong winds, and short summers. The area is also an important habitat for migratory birds and is part of a protected nature reserve. Access to Chatyr-Kul is restricted in some areas due to its proximity to the Chinese border, and permits are often required for travel beyond main roads.
