Shamshi Gorge is a dramatic mountain canyon located in the Kyrgyz Ala-Too range, roughly 80–120 km east of Bishkek. The gorge is carved by the Shamshi River and extends from lower forested valleys up to high alpine terrain exceeding 3,500 meters. The lower sections of the gorge are covered with dense spruce forests, wildflowers, and rich pasturelands used by nomadic herders. As the valley narrows and rises, it becomes steeper and more rugged, leading toward the high Shamshi Pass, which connects the Chui Valley with the Kochkor region. The gorge is also known for its biodiversity, including wildlife such as ibex, lynx, and various bird species. It has historical significance as an ancient route connecting northern Kyrgyzstan with central highland regions.
