Papan Reservoir is a man-made water body formed by damming the Ak-Buura River in the Nookat district of the Osh region. It was completed in the early 1980s and is one of the key hydraulic infrastructure projects in southern Kyrgyzstan. The reservoir stretches through a narrow mountain valley, creating a long, lake-like basin surrounded by arid foothills and rocky slopes. It plays a critical role in regulating seasonal water flow, supplying irrigation water to agricultural lands in the Fergana Valley and contributing to the water supply of Osh city. The dam itself is a significant engineering structure designed for long-term water storage and flood control. The reservoir also supports local ecosystems, including fish populations, and is occasionally used for recreation, though it is primarily a functional infrastructure site rather than a tourist lake. Surrounding landscapes include dry steppe foothills transitioning into the Alay mountain system, giving the area a mix of semi-desert and mountainous scenery.
