Orto-Tokoy Reservoir is one of the earliest large Soviet-era hydraulic projects in Kyrgyzstan. It was created by damming the Chu River in the Kochkor basin and remains an important water storage facility for irrigation and regional water management. The reservoir sits in a wide intermontane basin surrounded by semi-arid hills and steppe-like landscapes. Unlike high alpine lakes, its environment is more open and dry, with distant views of surrounding mountain ranges. It plays a key role in regulating water flow toward the Chu River system, supporting agriculture in northern Kyrgyzstan and downstream regions of Kazakhstan. Although primarily an infrastructure site, the reservoir is known for its calm waters, wide horizons, and scenic contrast between water and steppe terrain.
