Kara Darya River is a major river system flowing through the Osh and Jalal-Abad regions of Kyrgyzstan before continuing into Uzbekistan. It is one of the two primary rivers that form the Syr Darya, one of Central Asia’s largest rivers. The river is created by the confluence of multiple glacier-fed tributaries descending from the Tian Shan mountains. As it flows westward into the Fergana Valley, it becomes a broad and agriculturally significant waterway supporting irrigation, farming, and settlements across southern Kyrgyzstan. The Kara Darya basin includes fertile valleys, foothill landscapes, and densely populated agricultural regions. Historically, the river corridor was part of important Silk Road trade routes connecting Central Asia with China and Persia. The river eventually joins the Naryn River in Uzbekistan, where together they form the Syr Darya.
