The Upper Zone of Ala-Archa National Park represents the transition from forested valley to extreme alpine terrain in the Kyrgyz Ala-Too range of the Tian Shan mountains. Starting from the main gorge floor, the trail gradually climbs through spruce forests and river valleys before reaching the high-altitude section known as the Ak-Sai system. This upper region includes glaciers, steep rock walls, moraines, and permanent snowfields. Key landmarks include the Ak-Sai Glacier, the Ratsek (Racek) Hut area, and surrounding climbing bases used for expeditions. Above this level, the terrain becomes technical mountaineering territory with ice routes and high peaks exceeding 4,000–4,800 meters. This zone is one of the most important alpine training and expedition areas in Central Asia due to its accessibility from Bishkek and its dense concentration of glaciers and climbing routes.
