Kara-Kamysh Lake is a scenic alpine lake situated in the western Tian Shan mountains of Kyrgyzstan. It lies in the Aksy district, within a mountainous valley system close to the famous Sary-Chelek Biosphere Reserve. The lake stretches for about 1.3 km and is surrounded by steep forested slopes, alpine meadows, and rocky ridges. Locally it is often called “Kara-Kamysh” (“black reeds”) due to the vegetation along its shoreline, while in some maps it appears as “Kara-Suu,” meaning “black water.” The lake is part of a wider ecological corridor that includes rivers, waterfalls, and mountain passes connecting it to Sary-Chelek Lake. The surrounding environment is rich in biodiversity, with conifer forests, wildlife, and seasonal nomadic activity in summer pastures. Because of its relative remoteness and limited infrastructure, Kara-Kamysh remains a quiet and less visited destination compared to other lakes in Kyrgyzstan.
